Electronic identification tags: added cost or added value?

All cattle and deer in New Zealand must now be tagged with electronic identification tags within 180 days of birth or before the animal is moved off the farm, whichever comes first. As this new tagging system is more expensive than visual tags, is it an added cost for farmers or added value? In this article, we take a look at how EID tags are not only necessary for compliance but also how they can boost the productivity of your farming operation and be more profitable.

What do you need to make the most of EID data?

Along with an individual tag for each animal, you also need the following equipment to collect and use EID data. It’s important to set goals and define your objectives when collecting data so you can incorporate it into daily farm management.

  1. EID reader

These come as different devices depending on your needs. There are handheld devices, panel readers for cattle and deer moving through yards, and combined data collection units which can input data from other equipment like scales.

  1. Data entry

Depending on your setup, you’ll have different options for data entry. Certain models of EID readers allow data entry, and panels usually need an external device like a smartphone, tablet or laptop.

  1. Software

Again, certain devices have software for data management, and others require you to use a spreadsheet or similar application. There are also specialised applications available for stock management on subscription depending on your needs.

It pays to research your options before you purchase your EID setup so it provides you with the information you need to increase efficiency and see a return on your investment. We can talk you through the options if you need more detailed advice.

How your EID setup adds value

EID tags allow you to capture accurate data for every animal on your farm and recall it when you need it. It makes data collection easier, removes human error and gives you better traceability within the supply chain.

Having easy access to your data in a central location allows you to analyse what’s happening on the farm and allows you to make better decisions with animal management.

Having the capability to look at individual animals or groups has long-term benefits for reducing waste with the purchasing and using of resources such as pasture, feed and supplies you need to maintain the health and welfare of your stock.

Information is power, and you’ll get greater accountability for your farming operation, the option to analyse practical, historical data over time to further increase efficiency, and the ability to manage your labour and resources for greater profitability.

If you use data strategically and continually refine the collection process, you’ll achieve greater efficiency and boost profits.
